Move over Robert Schuller, the Church of Laodicea has a new star on the rise in the world of positive motivational Christianity. It"s Joel Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, whose motto is "Discover the Champion in You." He is the son of Pentecostal preacher the late John Osteen. But where his dad lacked in charm and charisma the 39-year-old son makes up for it in the style of a Tony Robbins with the looks of a Richard Gere. Osteen made the list of the Top 20 Influencers of the Pentecostal/charismatic community in the Jan/Feb 2003 Issue of Ministries Today magazine. He was listed with other notables such as Kenneth Hagin Sr., Tommy Tenney, C. Peter Wagner, and Joyce Meyer. "There is no arguing that the following 20 leaders have inspired us, challenged us and in many ways caused us to rethink what it means to "do church" in today's culture," the article boasted. The younger Osteen lives the life of prosperity that he preaches. A 2001 Real Estate Guide (http://northvalley.com/realestate_board/messages/
157.html
) valued his home at $1,265,500. His sermon titles give clues as to the focus of Osteen"s ministry:

Rocking the Boat with St. Jackie

by Jackie Alnor
Apostacy Alert
August 28, 2007

In the past week there have been three shocking stories in the secular press involving church women who have brought a reproach upon the Gospel in the eyes of the world. I have warned the church many times concerning these three women and challenged their ministries by the Word of God, as have other discerning voices in the church, yet mainstream Christendom"s Public Relations" policy of nonrockaboatus (as the late Bible-Answerman Walter Martin used to call it) lives on in the 21 st century.

There are forces at work within the Roman Catholic Church that are tired of being nice and ecumenical. The need for outward shows of brotherhood like the ECT (Evangelicals and Catholics Together) document is a thing of the past. They are beginning to show their true colors. The bait is no longer sweet and the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.

The change in strategy has been made possible by a new popularity for things Catholic that began with the opening of Mel Gibson"s film "The Passion of the Christ." Best-selling Catholic books in Evangelical bookstores by Catholic cross-over authors such as Brennan Manning and Peter Kreeft gave Rome another big boost.

End Times Catholic Misfits

by Jackie Alnor
Apostasy Alert

There"s a new breed of religious enthusiast that is peculiar to our present generation. They are a mutation of the Christian media and Romanism: a hybrid of sacramentalism, premillennialism, occultism, and fanaticism. They are outcasts in the Catholic church and yet are not at home in any Evangelical church either. They are cradle Catholics who have a passion for looking into the future and utilize diverse means to unlock the mysteries of the unknown. They give Nostradamus and the messages of Marian apparitions equal weight with Bible prophecy in their quest to put this giant jigsaw puzzle together. I call them End Times Catholic Misfits.

Twenty-some years ago, my sister Janet and I signed up for a field trip sponsored by the Crystal Cathedral to a Vedanta monastery in the nearby Saddleback Mountains. At that time we were working together on a discernment newsletter called "The New Age Alert" and attended as part of our research. The field trip was being promoted as an educational adventure to examine the similarities and differences of two supposedly opposite extremes of religious expression. The tour guide was a lady who was a long-time member of Robert Schuller"s Crystal Cathedral and she introduced herself as an aficionado of comparative religions.

The day started with a guided tour of the Crystal Cathedral grounds after we all met up at the statue of Job in the courtyard. Then after the tour of the most decadent ostentatious so-called house of God on the planet (that"s another story altogether), we boarded buses that took us on a short jaunt to the nearby wilderness. A man with a shaved head, in a red robe, with a blank look on his face greeted us. He told us not to concern ourselves with the fact that we would be ignored by all the Vedanta monks because they are in silence.

Communion: Catholic v. Christian

by Jackie Alnor
http://www.apostasyalert.org

Today I was channel surfing and stumbled across EWTN and a rerun of that elderly nun Mother Angelica. She is the spittin-image of my 8th grade teacher, Sister Eugenie, of whom I think fondly. It was a repeat of a January 15, 1994 Mother Angelica Live program with a focus on the "Eucharist." Mother was lamenting the Roman Catholic Church liberals who were no longer putting the doctrine of transubstantiation front and center. Callers also voiced their shock that priests in some Catholic churches were allowing people to stand instead of kneel as the elements were being changed into "the body, blood, soul, and divinity" of Jesus. Mother responded that the host is Jesus himself and is to be adored, not merely venerated.

Entertaining Devils Unawares

By Jackie Alnor

The Bible instructs us to be kind to strangers because we could be entertaining angels unawares. But the flip side to that is that we could be entertaining fallen angels unawares. Nowhere in church history is that more evident than in the Roman Catholic Church.

Bible-Answer-Man Turns Traitor

by Jackie Alnor
http://www.apostasyalert.org

The following news release just came through the E-List from Midwest Christian Outreach, headed up by apologist Don Veinot.  He reports that Hank Hanegraaff, the radio Bible-Answer-Man has taken the side of an abusive shepherding group, the Local Church, against Harvest House Publishers and authors John Ankerberg and John Weldon in a lawsuit initiated by the "church".
