Jan Crouch Hears Voices and LevitatesWritten by Jacob Prasch
by Jackie Alnor
An invisible prankster is apparently playing tricks on the flamboyant Trinity Broadcasting Network co-founder Jan Crouch. It calls out her name while she's working alone in her office and then doesn't respond when she answers its summons.Â
Crouch told her TBN newsletter readers of this strange mystical episode in the July 2004 TBN newsletter. Later, something awakened her in the middle of the night and left her suspended in mid-air, she claimed
"It happened last Wednesday," she wrote. "'Jan,' I heard a voice say. 'Yes,' I responded, looking around.. 'Hello.' I heard nothing. "Hello, is someone there? Did someone call me?' Working in my office about 4:00 p.m., I heard it again from down the hall: 'Jan.' I answered, 'Yes, I heard you.hello? Did someone call me?'. "It was 10:30 p.m. - and I was still in my office finishing up late faxes - I heard it again. 'Jan.' I froze in my chair. I said, 'Is someone there?' and got up quickly and went to the back door."
She could not find the source of the voice, so she then pulled her dogs close to her as she finished up and went home, she wrote. Then she described how she was awakened -- presumably by the source of that audible voice she heard earlier. "I suppose it was about three in the morning - I've been awakened a lot in the past year and when it happens I just talk to Jesus a while and usually fall back asleep - but this was different. I felt as if I was lifted up off my bed - not far, maybe one foot or so - but I felt as if I were floating and hands were holding me."
Apologist and discernment expert Mike Oppenheimer of Hawaii agreed with this writer that the episode was anything but benevolent. "Hearing a voice call her name and her reaction of bringing the dogs seems to show fear," he commented. "So there was no peace in this matter; she seems to know it was not Jesus."
After her testimony of this "heavenly" uplifting experience, she directed her readers into a guided imagery exercise so they too could encounter Jesus as she had. "There is a place right around your middle that lifts, when you draw a breath - I believe this is where the precious Holy Spirit abides. You can just be lifted in your sweet precious spirit now. Breathe in His love. Breathe in His peace. Breathe in His joy. Put your sweet hands over your tummy and breathe and lift. 'Jesus, Oh Sweet, Precious Jesus, FILL that emptiness.' Let Him lift your heavy burdens away. Let Him love you the way He wants to every single moment. Breathe in His Life."
Now that the participant is in a relaxed state, she then directed them to visualize Jesus: "I hope you are feeling His presence NOW. He loves you. He wants to renew that dream you had as a teen to do something sooooo special for Jesus - but the dream was "snatched away" by the burdens of this world... Think about that dream...you knew that it was a Jesus thing. He's renewing your mind and your dream now as you read - you see yourself again at 12, 15, 18 years old, dreaming BIG for Jesus...I will start TODAY - LIVING MY DREAM. Do you feel the joy? Are tears in your eyes? Are you seeing Jesus? Are you two getting the job started? This is your moment, sweet Partner."
Oppenheimer noted that if she was being lifted off the bed "this is certainly not God doing this, this is a demonic manifestation." Pastor G. Richard Fisher of New Jersey who writes for the highly regarded Personal Freedom Outreach Journal, agreed. "This is very, very occult. If she is not lying, she is a witch. They [TBN] are shameless with their being bizarre - but that is what the fans want."
Could it be that Mrs. Crouch's use of guided imagery, an occultic form of meditation, could have opened her up to demonic influence? It would seem so. "When she says 'I saw Jesus everywhere - in faces, on the walls, in hearts,' this too is occultic manifestations," noted Oppenheimer. "To see Jesus in hearts is nebulous and nonetheless unbiblical. It seems as if this woman has been introduced to a spirit guide named Jesus."
"'Breathe in His love. Breathe in His peace. Breathe in His joy. Put your sweet hands over your tummy and breathe and lift. 'Jesus, Oh Sweet, Precious Jesus, FILL that emptiness,' -- this too is occultic. There are a number of songs running through the church singing you are the air I breathe, (your holy presence). We do not breathe in the spirit or anything else of God. We have the Holy Spirit in us. This seems to be a lot of soulish me-stuff in her message," Oppenheimer concluded.
