"Brand-obsessed shoppers have adopted an almost fetishistic approach to consumption
in which the brand name acquires a talismanic power."
--Naomi Klein, No Logo (Picador, 2002), p. 141.
Creating situations that provoke psychological, emotional or sensual reactions in people is a form of behavior modification. This can come through marketing, education and training, or group processes. Triggering reactions in people, particularly if they are unaware of the subtleties, is an attempt to change values, beliefs, attitudes, opinions or actions.
Behavior modification is a utilitarian form of manipulation which has gained tremendous ground in evangelical leadership training circles in recent years. It works. It is pragmatic. The ends justify the means.
How much do you know about the Catholic Church and the followers of Catholicism? Most people are aware that Mary (the mother of Jesus) is on a very high pedestal, that Catholics go to mass every Sunday (the "good" ones, anyway), go to confession at least once a year, and take the Eucharist when at mass. That"s about all I knew as of 2 years ago, until I moved to Mexico - a VERY Catholic country.

Who are you going to believe " “ Rick Warren or your own eyes?
That's the dilemma I face.
You see, back in November, I had a series of e-mail exchanges with the pastor of Saddleback Church and the best-selling author of "The Purpose-Driven Life."

"Our goal has been to put people together who normally won't even speak to each other. We do not expect all participants in the Summit discussion to agree with all of our Evangelical beliefs. However, the HIV/AIDS pandemic cannot be fought by Evangelicals alone. It will take the cooperation of all " “ government, business, NGOs and the church. That is the purpose of this Summit " “ to marshal the policy of the government; the finances of business; the expertise of the health organizations; and the compassion, volunteerism and reach of the church in order to care for the sick and save lives." [Statement by Saddleback Valley Community Church Regarding Senator Barack Obama as One of Nearly 60 Featured Speakers at the Second Annual Global Summit on AIDS and the Church, Contact: Larry Ross. ]
The above press release "Statement" pertaining to the recent controversial AIDS conference at Saddleback is indicative of the new Social Gospel rapidly gaining prominence in evangelical circles. This Social Gospel is a re-hash of the old mainline denomination Social Gospel of the past century but it includes more partners " “ e.g., the corporate (business), NGOs, parachurch and mission groups. The new Social Gospel also comes in the slick new package of a global AIDS crisis " “ and tragically so.
Some Possible Answers to Joseph Farah's Question
If you haven't been following the series of events unfolding on WorldNetDaily go over to these articles and read up on what Rick Warren has been doing. He took a trip to Syria on a global "P.E.A.C.E." mission and got caught in the act of finding common ground. Here are the stories" ¦
California mega-church pastor Rick Warren, author of the best-selling "Purpose-Driven Life," reportedly told a Syrian-controlled news agency the U.S. should have been holding dialogues with Damascus; Syrian Muslims and Christians co-exist peacefully; and the Syrian leadership is responsible for the nation's tolerance and stability. That's according to the news agency SANA, which has issued a number of reports this week as Warren visits Syria and meets various leaders and officials, much to the dismay of many in the U.S.

"When you write the best-selling book in the world for the last three years, that changes your life.... Ten percent of America's churches have engaged in '40 Days of Purpose' programs, which have 'spread' to secular organizations, including sports teams and major corporations such as Ford, Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola, not to mention the military." :"(Wendy Kaminer, " Rick Warren, 'America's Pastor'" at www.thenation.com/doc/20050912/kaminer)": RickWarren

WASHINGTON " “ Rick Warren, the superstar mega-church pastor and bestselling author of ''The Purpose Driven Life,'' had a Damascus Road experience last week " “ and like Saul of Tarsus, one of the after-effects appears to be blindness.
Warren went to Syria and could find no persecution of Christians. He could find no persecution of Jews. He could find no evidence of extremism. He could find no evidence of the sponsorship of terrorism.
Despite the temporary loss of vision that prevented him from seeing any evil in the totalitarian police state, Warren's hearing was apparently not affected " “ for his ears were tickled by what he heard and apparently accepted lock, stock and barrel from the second-generation dictator, Bashar Assad, and his state-approved mufti.

Are there any Jewish Rick Warrens?
That"s not a fair question.
There are few people of any faith like Warren.
As I sat listening to him speak at Sinai Temple"s Friday Night Live Shabbat services last week, I thought of the only other person I"d met with Warren"s eloquence, charisma, and passion " ” but Bill Clinton carries a certain amount of baggage that Warren doesn"t.
Warren spoke at Sinai as part of the Synagogue 3000 program, which aims to revitalize Jewish worship.
