I Apologise, Dawn Primarolo
In a post yesterday I referred to the Minister for Public Health Dawn Primarolo’s blatant refusal on ideological grounds to tighten abortion laws. Yet last night I happened to chance upon her appearance before a Commons Select Committes on BBC Parliament (I fear I am one of their handful of sad viewers), and watching her performance I feel I really owe her a heartfelt apology. Watching her struggle to cobble together several coherent sentences in response to some robust questioning, I realised I had done Ms Primarolo a grave injustice. Her performance indicated someone not so much driven by intellect or ideology, but rather an intellectual pygmy with little understanding of the issues and totally out of her depth. Others too appear to have noticed the Minister is intellectually-challenged, apparently earning her the nickname `Dim’ Prawnarolo among her civil servants.
Given her dismal performance I decided to look briefly at her parliamentary voting record. It quickly confirmed my suspicions. Dim’s Dawn’s record indicates little in the way of ideology or conviction, but rather slavish support for the New Labour project. How else, as a Socialist, can one account for her most un-Socialist voting record? Ms Primarolo is little more than a starry-eyed puppet anxious to do her Puppetmaster’s bidding. Which brings me to the main point here. The Puppetmaster, Gordon Brown, launched his leadership campaign with a strong appeal to his religious upbringing. Yet just several months later his government is set to introduce sweeping liberalisation of our abortion laws, which are already some of the most liberal in the European Union.
I really believe typing off a brief letter or two to your MP, Dim Dawn, and the Puppetmaster can help make a difference here. Just a couple of sentences along the lines of, “Dr Mr Brown, I recall your leadership speech in which you spoke passionately of your religious upbringing as central to your political convictions. Yet just 100 days after coming to power I note your government is about to introduce sweeping reforms of our abortion laws, which are already some of the most liberal in the EU. I fear I will never be able to vote for your government if you do”. If you are in a church leadership position, why not let the Puppetmaster know you will also do your utmost to encourage your parishioners to do likewise. If there are enough of them, a flurry of letters in the next week or so will, I guarantee, make Brown sit up and take note. After all, since the election-that-never-was fiasco it has emerged that Brown has `bottled’ several important decisions in recent years. If the sense of panic in the Brown camp is exacerbated by enough people promising not to vote for his government if abortion laws are liberalised, he may well pull back from the brink. BUT ONLY IF WE DO OUR BIT.
Find your MP here. Send your letter to Ms Primarolo here (also send a copy to the House of Commons). Contact the Puppetmaster through these means (but remember, nothing beats a proper letter sent by post).
